The chemical details are rather boring and many gem labs will simply certify them as 'pyrope-almandine-garnet'. 100% pure almandine or pyrope is rare in nature. They usually come together and certain combinations are called 'rhodolite' or 'raspberry' garnets in some markets but not in others.

Whatever the mix, almandine is commonly deep red, and offers a reasonable alternative to ruby or red spinel. Though almandines are found all over the world they are a typical Ceylon gem for me. In good supply and in big sizes they make excellent material for precision cuts which uses up more rough and is thus rarely done on expensive rubies.

Well cut, medium dark red almandines are very thankful gems and easy on the budget. Avoid brown, bad cuts (no excuse to save rough, especially here), and too dark shades. 'Medium 50' to 'Medium Dark 75' will do just fine. As stars and cat’s eyes they are often dark and thus rather cheap.

When a classification into a specific class is possible e.g. rhodolite we will show the gem here (as an also almandine) and in the rhodolite section. When no clear classification is possible we resort to 'red garnet' covering equal mixtures of almandine and pyrope.

Almandine has been produced as synthetic and can be treated to represent other gems. They are also used in doublets with ruby.
