They share beryllium and aluminum in their chemical formula but in a different order and that makes them completely different gemstones. They, the chrysoberyls, are harder and more durable than beryls. They are also a relatively ‘small’ variety with only cat’s eyes and color-changers as sub-members. As the former they are considered THE classical cat’s eye, as the latter they have gained fame as one of the most expensive materials on earth, the alexandrite.

Routed in the Ceylon gem trade, Wild Fish has always considered chrysoberyl a gem of great importance. They are, however, not found in many of the big gem mining countries around the world. In Sri Lanka, it is one of the classics, a well-known and highly appreciated gems. Alexandrite and cat’s eye’s aside, though, it rarely found in high-end jewelry, less so in mass market products and remains a trade secret amongst connoisseurs and jewelers daring to try and stand out.

Yet, to know chrysoberyl is to love it. Green and yellow are the dominant colors in all chrysoberyl (alexandrite and cat’s eye aside). The extremely rare vanadium twin is also green but with a neon blue mixed in.

Whoever is in the market for golden honey, grass green or yellow-green gemstones should not forget to consider a chrysoberyl. I will not talk badly about alternatives but in many cases ‘chryso’ (amongst friends) has all to offer, top brilliancy, rich colors and clean crystals but is mild on the budget.

In the mountains of Sri Lanka, chrysoberyls are placed on freshly born baby’s foreheads to protect, livelong, from evil spirits. If the happy parents are too poor to buy the gem, they can be ‘borrowed’ for the ceremony only: rent-a-chryso.
