Comment: Hessonite is a very ancient gemstone variety, perhaps one of the oldest varieties that was correctly distinguished from others due to its seemingly liquid inner consistency or 'life'. It is a type of grossularite garnet that comes in mostly orange hues and is easily recognised by the swirls or twisted bands that fill the gem. The density of this inner structure can be very high (like in this piece, giving it a near translucent character) or barely visibly (showing more brilliancy then). This 17(!) carat gem was precision cut by Conny Forsberg in Sweden. Note the master-cut also in back images. It will do wonders in a pendant, ever unique, not pushy but always visible and outstanding. Famously hessonite was used by Greek philosophers to counter the negative effects of alcohol but we do recommend moderation even if you have the mind of a Socrates. At $450/carat a snatch for a giant, fully natural coloured and untreated gemstone. Probably the biggest precision cut hessonite ever.
