Comment: Surpringly big face with almost 10x8mm from a sub-three-carat hessonite. No window thanks to a visibly old but well performed traditional hand-cut (1970'ies). As obvious in the images, and also to the eye, this hessonite gives you exactly what they are famous for: a thick resinous crystal, seemingly about to change its physical state from solid to fluid and melt away in your hand, all the while remaining more durable than 99% of all matter. Under the lens, you can follow these fluid swirls in more detail but they remain hard to pinpoint. Increasing magnification pulls you deeper into fluid shapes and forms but it never stops, there always is another, deeper level, like in these mathematically produced images of infinite calculations. This hessonite-only phenomenon has secured the variety a historic place amongst colored gems. Many legends have been woven around, and powers have been attributed to this specific type of grossular garnet over the millennia. In fashionable vivid orange hues and larger sizes, hessonite demands serious funds, but this darker brownish red-orange type remains affordable yet no less fascinating.
