Comment: Fine colored cabochon ruby in a high half sphere with no underbelly but flat bottom. This shape gives maximum face-up size from just under three carat, normally not much for a cabochon, but here maximized with 8mm round and 4mm higth. Though classified by IGI as translucent, we prefer to call it opaque. On the surface, barely visible, I guess, to the young sharp eye, are two or three inclusions, visible in the photos, though I fail to catch them without lens. The color is a fresh flowery pink-red, no brown, or gray, and without zoning. Will make an impressive centerstone for an antique design ring, perhaps a white gold band with yellow gold bezel, or vice versa. Only in the backside image ('more images') do we notice the parallel growth-lines and a few inclusions. As the handshot shows, this is an eye-catching hue in a bright but never pale tone. Certified untreated and unheated, meaning also no surface fillers or other treatments common in cabochons; nothing but ruby. The image with dark background testifies to its good fluorescence, breaking out in a posh gleam with a litle sun and keeping it red even in lowest light. More visibility from a cabochon is hard to imagine. Quality ruby in fine color but affordable cabochon cut. As all our gems, it pays for rainforest protection and the, IMHO, currently best positioned animal rights group. See more images for side-views and the dome's heigth.
