Comment: A rare 'Fine Color Quality' classification from IGI for this 44 points drop-shaped ruby. This and last year, we have mostly been buying small but excellent rubies. With the 'crazy' price competition for big unheated rubies, qualities like this one in bigger sizes are being picked off right at the mines and resurface only on retail level. Luckily, we have over one hundred full-sized unheated rubies in stock and can relax for a while. Yet, with only 20 in the small category, we have concentrated on filling up the sub one-carat lot. We also invested newly into colored diamonds, opals, pearls and new CC garnets while they were still available. Hence here another small but fine quality ruby for this month. Though IGI could not ID the rubies' origin, due to lack of inclusions, we have followed its path from Burma over India and Germany to us. Extra high brilliancy especially for a pear shape (not a usually luster-oriented cut), no window, no treatments, totally no eye-visible inclusions (lens only), adding up to our 3*Nos of Excellence and then some. IGI named purple as secondary color but IMHO we have a very pure red with blazing pink fluorescence (see one 'more image' under light UV light, though more light does here not transfer well on photo, it only turns them to a color-blob). From the back and under the lens you may find more purple influence. The same is true for the unfortunately named 'cavity', reminding of dentists, not gems; the correct wording would be 'natural indent' or simply a 'natural', a crystal inclusion dropped from the surface. Called whatever, this indent, too, is visible only under the lens and with a steady hand and good eyes. Under normal circumstances, at jewelry distances, a half meter, but also far beyond, this little gem shines like a bright red torch throughout a normal sized room. Pendant-material in my opinion but some do like pear shapes in rings (or heart-shapes). A Q of taste.
