Overall Grade: Very Good+

Comment: Sky blue sapphire with a flowery violet touch (Asian misnomer 'purple'). Always blue, never dark, never pale, little grey. Lively octagon scissor cut without window, no visible inclusions (lens only), no treatments. Finest crystal. Certified 'Sri Lanka,' an increasingly rare pedigree with most corundum coming from East Africa even if sold from Colombo. Though Ceylon had one big sapphire-find about five years ago, the actual mining production has long been far below the gem-fame of the island founded in the middle ages. Direct flights between Colombo and Madagascar, or Paraiba and Mozambique for that matter, point to modern trade roads:-). Anyways, this is a classic bright blue Ceylon in an exquisite precision cut with good luster, clean and all-natural. Tone and hue is best seen on wood and handshot. Beautifully sharp luster. The grey background shows too much blue (without digital editing or white balance). Just under 6x5mm is not giant but will catch attention as a solitaire gem in a size up to 5 with prongs, 6 with bezel.
