Overall Grade: Excellent

Comment: No window, no inclusions, no treatments in a lush berry colored spinel with near 10x7mm face-up from 'only' 2.47 carats. Medium Dark 75 allows a rich hue but does not turn black. AIGS voted 'purple' but IMO the red is almost as strong. In any case a luxurious color without grey or pink. Inclusions only under the lens, if at all. Flawless handcut. Spinels have been the most appreciated secondary gems for almost two decades now. While the public reaction was mostly 'spinel?' when we started 20 years ago, it has changed to 'Spinel!' With the Mahenge shock and ruby prices (including normal heat) going through the roof, many have come to look for alternatives amongst this most versatile gem variety. The best red and fine cobalt have already joined sapphire/rubies. On the edges you can still pick up great natural colors, such as this at $1.6k/ct (or less if you have a memberpass or one of our five monthly vouchers). Note its unusual big face-up in 2-3ct range, normaly this is a 4 carat size. It will not fit in a small ring without appropriate design.
