Comment: Here is an interesting study of concave cuts. Immediately obvious is their extreme photogenic performance for example on the IGI report (under 'more images'). In fact, I can't remember a bad looking photo of a concave cut. And, no, that is not because only great gems get a such fancy cut. It is their additional reflective surface that CAN hides many flaws, such as inclusions, hazy crystals, or dark tones. Of course, that does not mean all concave cut gems are flawed, but buyers beware. Just because a gem allows fantastic photos does not means it's fantastic quality. Study this 6.6 carats hessonite in the main image and under 'more images'. The flower-shaped back-side with concave and convex surface reflects light like a firework seen from the inside. Close-up in normal light those reflections cover flaws and dazzle the eye. It looks fantastic and I've even spared you the very best shots. Yet, this is a dark caramel-colored hessonite with the typical swirls of hessonite and several inclusions, all disappeared in the magic of the cut. Only in the distanced handshot can you see that the gem is relative dark with a hazy sparkle. Still a nice gem, warm colored and well-sized, precision-cut, no window etc. but my best hessonites in this size demand $1k/carat or more. BTW, checkerboards have a similar effect as concave cuts but that is a new topic for another gem. This $190/ct hessonite is fun to study, and comes with all WildFish perks.
