Comment: Always hard-to-match alexandrites because they always seem to change colors in different steps or at least the camera makes it appear so. Here are two such rarities selected from our source of Fort Victoria, Zimbabwe. The extreme color-change from red to green is marvelous and practically non-existent in transparent alexandrite of lighter tones. The main image shows one in red next to the other in green. The mixed daylight color is a dark blueish purple. See under 'more images' a back-side shot with the light source sitting behind the gems to evaluate their clarity, somewhere between moderately included and translucent. The latter makes these Alexandrites an affordable adventure striking a zero off the price tag.
* P.S. DSEF has also detected minor surface oil in the specific lot that they checked for this month. Before, we did not have this result (not from DSEF nor from IGI) and these gems all come from the same source and supply-path. We assume that either DSEF has raised its standards and that some oil or wax has been left over from the cutting or polishing process. We do not consider these residues a 'treatment' since they were not done, nor resulted in, any enhancement of the gems. Further investigations at GIA have confirmed this.
