Comment: Another new gem-variety getting more and more attention thanks to its qualities and its new availability via the internet. Strongly pleochroic, meaning showing different colors from different directions, the cutter must choose the exactly right direction to bring the best color into the visible face, as is the case in this precision cut. In that ideal direction iolite presents a beautiful deep violet, competing with sapphire or tanzanite. Tilted, the hue turns brighter blue, then purple, lightens further, until, when viewed from the side, the gem becomes almost colorless, even turns yellowish from behind. See 'more images' with side and back-view. This is not color-zoning (gemologically spoken), though one might confuse it. The other pear shapes iolites that arrived with this lot, show different effects. Not a terribly soft gem, good enough for protective jewelry, not as hard as sapphire but at least as hard as tanzanite. No window, no inclusions, no treatments. BGL report, free shipping, grading papers, a plot of rainforest protected and an animal represented in the court of human rights.
