Comment: No matter how close or far you work from the gem-mines, no matter how experienced you are, unless you have a full blow mobile lab inside your truck, you will, from time to time, buy an X for an Y, especially in rough gems and parcels. Richard Hughes, I think it was, coined the saying that 'the closer to the mines, the more BS is on sale' or something to that effect. In 95% of those cases one buys a lower value X for too many $$$, often it is less value for too many bucks, sometimes it is even worthless junk for good money, mostly rough synthetics made to look like water worn pebbles. But then, very rarely, one is lucky and comes out on the good side. So here: This precision cut round came in a parcel of dark red garnets on the lowest end of the scale, some worth the IGI report. However, sorting through the parcel I noticed unexpected luster from a lively crystal in this 6mm red round sweetie. Out it came from the left-over parcel, went to IGI with the other good catches and returned as the rarest type of zircon: red-(orange), dark red but sparkly, ready to take on rubies with higher dispersion and durability, zero inclusions, precision cut 6mm round from under one carat without window (despite 57% depth). The main image, on black background and under little light was chosen to point-out its dark character as opposed to the all-red on white background. As so often, the handshots capture the best IRL representation. A lucky catch for a special piece of jewelry.
