７００年以上の歴史を持つといわれるこの産地のルビーは、大理石母岩付きの色・形の良い結晶標本ならば探す努力をすることで入手できました。しかし、ＧＩＡのGems & Gemology Summer 2000 に掲載されているような素晴らしいファセットカットされた宝石品質のものは、国内やインターネットで何年探しても見つかりませんでした。 ですから、ワイルドフィッシュさんに初めて希望を叶えて貰う形になりました。
しかもおそらくＧＩＡ研究サンプル中のファセットカットルビー４つよりも色も透明度も良さそうに見えます。 印刷された宝石写真が濃いめに写ることを差し引かないでそのまま見比べても、届いたルビーの色の方が優って見えます。
その美しさは、Mogok産や見たこともない鳩の血色にこだわる気の毒な姿勢にいっそう免疫を与えてくれると思います。 このようなルビーが出てくる可能性は、アフガンの政情が安定化したとしても極めて稀でしょうが、治安や資金面の問題をクリアすれば今より大きくなると思われます。 もっと難しいかも知れませんが、 パキスタン・フンザ渓谷産のフラクチャーの少ない宝石品質ルビーが登場することにも望みがつながりました。
ジェグダレック鉱山産ルビーは、普通は結晶にフラクチャーが多く透明度が下がるため、Mogok産の宝石品質ルビーに匹敵するものが出てくる可能性はかなり稀なはずです。 ほとんどはカボッションカットに適した品質まででしょう。 Wild Fishさんの開拓努力に感謝致します。 かつて、1ct台や2ct台の大粒で透明度の高いファセットカットのJegdalekルビーを３，４ルース見出したことがありました。しかしそれらは白熱灯下でもかなりピンキッシュなルースでしたので、色的にJegdalekルビーとしては抵抗感がありました。 その他にカラット当たり１００＄未満の品質のフラクチャーの多い亜透明～半透明のルースを多数見かけました。 日本市場では鉛ガラス含浸処理など無しに透明度が高くて色の良い物は本当に見つかりません。処理で高品質のJegdalekルビーは、これまで主に欧米の人々に流れているものと思われました。

...表現の難しいスピネルらしい色合いですね。 顕微鏡でも確認させていただきました。 最も顕著な内包物は、典型的なFinger-printの様な液体インクルージョン（指紋状インクルージョン）を思わせます。 糸筋を引きながらカーブ模様を描いているのを見ると液体だと思われるかも知れませんが、実際は、ドロマイトのような結晶インクルージョンが描き出している模様のようです。
でもこれこそ指紋ぽい感じがします。
これは素晴らしい標本になります。

"I did receive the Demantoids, Peridot and your blue Kyanite.
I like the Demantoids very much, they are quite the sparklers. I am having the larger pair set as dangles that will slip on my daughter's pair of white sapphire stud earrings. The smaller pair will eventually become studs for my granddaughter when she is old enough. Then I took the demantoids to my "former" local jeweler. He said your stones were too low in RI to be Demantoids but they might be Topazolites (which I had never heard of but since have looked up as also Andradite with likely similar RI as Demantoid). Then he tried to sell me a "great deal" on an estate piece emerald ring. When I looked at the stone in my darkfield loupe I said it was seriously cracked and fracture filled which irritated him no end.
Anyway I retrieved the Demantoids and have since found a new jeweler who agreed they were quite nice (actually asked if I had any more) and very brilliant if a bit unusual in color. This couple has recently mover to Arizona after having an upscale store in Southern California for many years. They seem nice and competent without any desire to "wheel and deal" like my "former" local jeweler. I am anxious to see them when he is finished.
I do like the Kyanite, it is a much better crystal than I have read about. Don't know what I will do with it yet. I have also come to see more blue in the "iceberg" after comparing it side by side with the Peridot."

"I received the 1.76 star on Monday 1/04. That afternoon my mother wished to see the stone in the car (!) which of course resulted in its popping out and bouncing somewhere unseen. Thankfully less than 24 hours went by before rediscovering the star, which had nestled in part of a seatbelt mechanism, unharmed.
The stone is gray to the eye under fluorescent lamps but is indeed a very gray blue in more natural lighting. Your grading report and photography accurately present the star's properties in detail by my examination(s). The asterism is indeed super and surprisingly defined for so small a sapphire. I can appreciate that the cut is pretty evenly proportioned having cut my first cabochon of softer jasper last year, without worrying about bringing out any asterism. The polish / finish is even as well.
Apart from the 1.76 I am intimately familiar with 5 other star sapphires - my 13.5 carat stone in an art deco ring and the Ceylon stones my great-grandfather brought back from his travels (12 carat pendant, 2 approximately 5 carat stones set in earrings and a 1.5 carat star still loose since the 1930s or 1940s). Sadly the sixth and finest stone, set in a ring, was stolen.
It's interesting to note that the rutile silk appears to be slightly finer in the sapphires from Sri Lanka but I understand that could well just be the composition of this particular Burmese star sapphire. In fact, I somehow exhibit a personal preference for stones with the more opaque and even "silky sheen" such as this one rather than those with very apparent hexagonal crystalline structures visibly zoning between the darker color of the corundum and the lighter color of the silk (again, my layman hobbyist analysis may be off). There is an occasional spider's web effect as light hits the surface at certain angles on this one.
At any rate, your report comment was spot-on as the dainty will be enjoyed by me, a collector of gemstone phenomena whose budget accommodated the purchase. I felt and still feel the oval shape and lack of excess depth will lend the 1.76 quite nicely to a slender tie bar taking advantage of the more neutral gray tone as opposed to a saturated blue hue, but my father (the Jeffrey M. on the shipping address) considers the 1.76 too nice to go unnoticed on a tie bar. I'll figure something out - either an inventive and handsome tie bar or something like a pinky ring where the star shall be face up in the sunlight.
Thank you for honestly presenting the 1.76. Star sapphires are quite uncommon in my corner of the United States despite my ring and the heirloom pieces in my family.
Your writings on gems, in particular the criteria for judging stars, has been consistently enlightening and the blog posts on factors surrounding the stones, thought-provoking. Keep up the good work."

昨日届きました。夕暮れ時に届いたサファイアは甘いオレンジのネオン一杯で、そうですね、ロードナイトのような感じでしょうか。華やかで鮮やかで、蓮よりはバラの花のようでした。
一見オレンジが強いように見えるのに、他の石と並べると赤いのです。
先ほど太陽の下でずーっと眺めておりましたが、紫外線が入るとルビーにも似たローズピンクが鮮やかに出てきます。
なんとよく表情を変える石でしょう。
海面に落ちる直前の夕陽の色、でした。
